Carl Perkins - Original Sun Greatest Hits Specifications

There's something about Carl Perkins's original version of "Blue Suede Shoes" that's wilder than Elvis's less popular, though today better known, cover of the song. It's not that Perkins is in your face; his version is remarkably restrained. But that restraint hides a real sense of hillbilly threat--Elvis is playing, but Carl sounds like he'd kick your teeth in. That vocal edge, along with his influential lead guitar, is what makes Perkins' sides such as "Honey Don't" and "Everybody's Trying to Be My Baby" the very definition of rockabilly's darker edge--all of which becomes perfectly clear when he finally cuts loose and gets "Dixie Fried." --David Cantwell

House of Music Quality Best

House of Music Overview

Japanese Version Features Exclusive Bonus Track (S).

House of Music Specifications

Like any other old-school R&B band trying to establish some street cred these days, Tony Toni Tone devotes one track on House of Music to a collaboration with a guest rapper. The track is the first single, "Let's Get Down," and the rap star is DJ Quik, but the results are not what you'd think. For one thing, the Oakland trio applies its trademark of relaxed self-assurance to the mix. While everyone else in hip-hop and R&B is flinging electronic beats, synth bleeps, and vocal beefs at the listener, Tony Toni Tone never hurries. Lead singer Raphael Saadiq, cq his brother Dwayne Wiggins and their cousin Timothy Christian Riley exude the confidence that they're in control, so they can take the time to let the beat sway and slide rather than slam all the time. --Geoffrey Himes

Lenka Quality Best

Lenka Overview

In Sydney, Australia, Lenka was a teen actress who trained with Cate Blanchett, thereafter landing leading roles on stage, television and indie films. A self-described 'punk-ass art school student' and vocalist/keyboardist for acclaimed indie Electronic/ambient outfit Decoder Ring. She has flung herself into two new worlds simultaneously: she's moved to California and become a solo artist. Whether channelling our long-repressed terrors ('Trouble') or long-lost innocence ('We Will Not Grow Old'), her music evokes primal emotions, unblemished by pretense or cynicism and unashamed of cracking a smile occasionally. Lenka's fresh sensibility extends to every element of her music, as the whimsical, paper art, stoimated videos she creates.'It's a mood-enhancer,' she says of her record, 'I don't like it when people are depressed. I want to cheer them up.'

The Lost Boys: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Quality Best

The Lost Boys: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Overview

Includes Good Times; Laying Down the Law INXS and Jimmy Barnes; Lost in the Shadows (The Lost Boys) Lou Gramm; a cover of Elton John's Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me by Roger Daltrey; a cover of the Doors' People Are Strange by Echo & the Bunnymen; Cry Little Sister (Theme from The Lost Boys) Gerard McMann; Power Play Eddie & the Tide; I Still Believe Tim Cappello; Beauty Has Her Way Mummy Calls, and To the Shock of Miss Louise Thomas Newman.

The Lost Boys: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack Specifications

Director Joel Schumacher, who went on to helm many big-budget, tiny-intellectual movies, gave us an 1980s update of the story of the vampire. It was all hip, good-looking, and tremendously vacuous. Similarly, the music doesn't break any new ground or offer much that's timeless. INXS' collaborations with Jimmy Barnes are fine, for instance, but Foreigner vocalist Lou Gramm's "Lost in the Shadows (The Lost Boys)" verges on the painful in a way that only overwrought 1980s music can. Roger Daltrey's take on Elton John's "Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me" is by the numbers, and so wasted. It's only Echo and the Bunnymen's cover of The Doors' "People Are Strange" that warrants much attention, even if it's, erm, buried. --Scott Wilson

Check Out College Dropout for $9.46

College Dropout Quality Best

College Dropout Overview

This debut from the most sought-after hip-hop producer not named Pharrell delivers the unthinkable: West magically sledgehammers home his opinions on taboo topics over beats that are equally daring. The envelope-ripping beats shouldn't come as a surprise given that he's supplied the soundscapes to monster singles by everyone from Alicia Keys ("You Don't Know My Name") to Talib Kweli ("Get By"). What is freakish is that in West's world, rhymes about strippers, God, college life, and guns can co-exist tidily and not undermine each other. On "Breathe In Breathe Out" he raps "I gotta apologize to Mos and Kweli/is it cool to rap about gold if I told the world I copped it from Ghana and Mali"--tongue firmly planted in cheek. On the catchy "Through the Wire," fuelled by a Chaka Khan hook, he spits some impeccable rhymes despite his jaw being wired shut after a near-fatal car accident. Maybe it was this brush with mortality that kicked his lyrics into high gear on "All Falls Down." The skits on here are just as potent, one poking fun at the overeducated underclass that makes a small fraction of the loot he does. With jaw-dropping cameos from Jay-Z, Common, Mos Def, and the Harlem Boys Choir plus the feel-good club tune of the year, "Slow Jamz" featuring Twista, College Dropout is as explosive, contradictory, and complex as rap music gets. --Dalton Higgins

Beautiful Ballads Review

Beautiful Ballads Overview

No Description Available
No Track Information Available
Media Type: CD
Artist: ISLEY BROTHERS
Title: BEAUTIFUL BALLADS
Street Release Date: 08/09/1994
Domestic
Genre: SOUL/R & B

Beautiful Ballads Specifications

The Isley Brothers were known for their ability to rock the house, but in truth they were an accomplished vocal group before they were anything else. Beautiful Ballads collects some of their sweetest, most soulful slow songs from the '70s and '80s, reaches over into the rock world for Todd Rundgren's "Hello It's Me," James Taylor's "Don't Let Me Be Lonely Tonight," and Bob Dylan's "Lay Lady Lay," and adds originals such as "Don't Say Goodnight" and "Caravan of Love." Beautiful Ballads goes beyond being a mere soundtrack for seduction (though that works, too): this is healing music, good for the heart as well as the soul. --Daniel Durchholz

Fly Overview

Fly Specifications

After the roaring success of Wide Open Spaces--a blend of turn-of-the-century pop and country traditionalism--what do you do for an encore? Rather than deliver more of the same, the Chicks have chosen instead to up the ante in country radio with a follow-up that's both poppier and twangier than its predecessor, and just plain better too. Some of it we've heard before: "Hello Mr. Heartache," for example, adheres pretty closely to the honky-tonk model of "Tonight the Heartache's On Me." Mostly, though, the record lights out for new territories. "Without You" is driven by an in-your-face string arrangement that's downright fierce, and the rootsy "Sin Wagon" may rock harder--and with more solos--than any mainstream country since Buck Owens held forth. That's not to say Fly's perfect. A couple of songs miss the mark, particularly "Goodbye Earl," an abusive-husband murder song that's sure to get criticized (wrongly) for being anti-male but actually fails because it can't decide if it's a moral lesson, a horror movie, or a joke. Still, even in this failure, the Chicks are bravely pushing the envelope. If they push hard enough, maybe Young Country radio will open up some wider spaces. --David Cantwell
